That is the smell of burning rubber on the “International Community Highway” as the British government raises the possibility of Iran being allowed (under supervision) to develop civil nuclear technology.
Let me be clear. The problem is not that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear technology. The problem rather is that this is an unstable nation in an unstable corner of the world. The government of this nation has tried to pull the wool over the international community’s eyes for too long. The government of this nation talks of peace but fails to demonstrate any commitment to such an ideal. This is a nation, whose government could invite the scientists in to supervise their civil nuclear technology programme and then use them as pawns in a show of international chess as and when they choose.
If we have learnt nothing else from Iraq it should be that an inspector system does not work in the long run.
