Crunch Time (Cont’d)

They say a week is a long time in politics.

However, less than 48 hours after announcing that polls scheduled for 2011 would instead be held this May, Iceland’s Prime Minister, Geir Haarde is on his way to see the Icelandic President, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, to request a dissolution of Parliament.

In the interim period, Icelanders can look forward to a period of coalition government haggling and negotiating, just as the country struggles with its worst ever economic crisis.

It is to be hoped that the May 9 elections are held earlier to ensure that a new government can start tackling the titanic problems facing the country, sooner rather than later.
