There are reports that just as Israel extends its ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, members of the Israeli Cabinet are themselves in their trenches. The division comes between Livni (Israel’s foreign minister) and Ehud Barak (the Israeli defence minister) and the Prime Minister (Ehud Olmert).
The “Livnians” see the objective of the conflict as paralysing Hamas’ military ability. The “Olmertites” see the objective as paralysing Hamas’ military and political ability.
It is not inconceivable that the majority of Israelis would side with the Livnians position, as most (especially within the 40km range of Hamas’ rockets) just want to see the attacks end.
Time will of course tell whose position lies on the right side of history.
